Heart and Soul: Realms of Glory - Part 2 of 2 To dream of flying is a primeval instinct, reflected in the symbolism of the world's faiths. While few airline passengers today contemplate the religious dimension of flight, Gerald Butt argues that the experience of flying can be a deeply spiritual one. He explores why the physical process of rising into the sky can inspire intense spiritual reflection. Are our brains somehow wired in such a way that we feel exhilarated in overcoming the gravitational field of earth? He discusses these views with others who fly, including journalist and pilot Lane Wallace and Richard Bach, author of Jonathan Livingstone Seagull, the story of a seagull learning about life and flight. British Poet Laureate Andrew Motion recites a new poem titled Coming In To Land - heard for the first time in this programme - which is based on the writings of a young airman killed in the Second World War. 10 January - programme times | Listen to current programme
